Ole Jørgen graduated in chemistry, physical geography and ecology from the University of Oslo in 1982. He also has a degree in ecology (cand.real). He later studied economics and business administration at The Business Manager School of Norway (NKI) and in 1997 took a docorate (dr.techn) in systems analysis and life cycle assessments at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

His professional career began at the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment in 1982, where he worked on nature conservation and the connection between nature conservation and sectors such as oil and gas, defence, agriculture and forestry. From 1985 he worked chiefly on strategy development and research in the department.

Ole Jørgen was the first employee at Ostfold Research. Since then he has been the institute manager for Environmental Protection Research (1988-93), a researcher and manager for the LCA team (1993-95), managing director (1995-97), senior research scientist and research leader, before he was engaged as managing director once again from December 2005 to October 2009. For 7 years he was employed as a Adjunct Professor of Industrial Ecology and Environmentally Correct design at NTNU.

In additon to his work at Ostfold Research, Ole Jørgen is chairman of the board at Emballasjeforsk, which is a network of companies and R&D institutes working on packaging related research.
