Climate accounting for Borregaard

Ostfold Research will calculate the emissons of green house gases from the production of cellulose, ethanol, lignin and vanillin at Borregaard in Sarpsborg.

Borregaard wish to raise their profile in relation to climate challenges, and therefore want to calculate the emissions of green house gases throughout the life cycle of their products.

Ostfold Research has long experience in this field, and is also practised in carrying out environmental assessments of biomass and bioenergy. The project will be conducted as a cradle-to-gate analysis, which means that every upstream process as well as the processes that take place at Borregaard will be included. The basic data will principally come from Borregaard's activities, based on material and energy flows through the process facility. When it comes to emissions from use of energy, transportation and production of purchased chemicals, Ostfold Research will be using general data from its international databases .

The project will be carried out on a basis of methodology associated with life cycle assessments and methods which are internationally standardized in accordance with ISO 14040-48.
