Life cycle assessment of CO2 capture and storage - Phase 2
As a result of the interesting findings from our analysis of a planned gas power plant with CO2 capture at Tjeldbergodden, StatoilHydro wish to extend the project with a second phase.
In the autumn of 2007 and the spring of 2008, Ostfold Research conducted a life cycle assessment of a planned gas power plant with CO2 capture and storage. Natural gas from the Heidrun field would be used in a future power plant at Tjeldbergodden. The planned treatment plant was based on amino-absorption of carbon dioxide from flue gases. After passing through the cleaning plant, the carbon dioxide would be transported through 150 kilometers of pipeline, and then be deposited. The analysis compared this system to a case without the capture of carbon dioxide.
The results proved to be so interesting, that StatoilHydro has decided to extend the project. The target in stage two is to analyse how different scenarios for the production of steam to regenerate amine affect the final result. Among the scenarios which will be analysed are, the use of bioenergy in a separate steam boiler and drawing off steam from the turbines in the power plant.
Reports from both phase one and two will be produced on the completion of phase two. The analysis will focus on the green house effect, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation potential and total energy consumption. Each result will be presented per kWh delivered electricity.
