Hanne graduated in 1992 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) with a degree in civil engineering (watercourse constructions) . She has worked at Ostfold Research since 1996, chiefly on the environmental documentation and optimsing of different energy and waste systems. She began working on her PhD in august 2009, which is part of the research project "Energy Trade and the Environment 2020", for which Ostfold Research is the project manager. Hanne has previously been employed at Asplan Viak in Bergen, where she worked with projecting water and sanitation solutions.

Her spare time is spent together with friends and family. Orienteering is one of Hanne’s main interests, and she is active both as a participant and organiser.
