Optimal packaging and food products

Contact person: Hanne Møller

The focus of the projects is on optimising value chains for food packaging in relation to the use of resources, the environment and economy, and the entire chain of raw materials, from producer to consumer. As a result of negotiated agreements between the authorities and the packaging sector in Norway, there is now a requirement that the industry should work on optimising its use of packaging.

Through systematic studies of packaging development in Norway, we carry out projects in order to document that the industry is achieving its goals  As a result of several network projects carried out in cooperation with 'Matforsk' and Norconserv, methods and tools have been developed for the analysis of packaging solutions with regard to the total value chain - these both for use in the development of new packaging solutions and for comparing the efficiency of different solutions.

In addition Ostfold Research is carrying out life cycle assessments of both packaging and food products. These will form  the basis for environmental declarations and climate certificates for products and businesses. Ostfold Research is a member of Emballasjeforsk ( where Ole Jørgen Hanssen is the Chairman) and of  IAPRI - an international network for research in this field.
