Relevant environmental aspects of the use of biofuels - the status of international work

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Concern about security of supply, the agricultural product market and climate neutrality has given rise to considerable global investment in biofuels. The selection of raw materials, location and technology have markedly differing effects on environmental and resource management. With this in mind, the Ministry of the Environment requires a status overview of the international work on environmental assessment of relevant aspects of the use of biofuels.

Environmental evaluation of products from Borregaard - stage 2

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Ostfold Research has created climate accounts for Borregaard's products, and now Borregaard wish to extend the analysis and to make environmental declarations for their products. They are also interested in applying for a Nordic 'Swan' eco-label.

Life cycle assessment of CO2 capture and storage - Phase 2

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

As a result of the interesting findings from our analysis of a planned gas power plant with CO2 capture at Tjeldbergodden, StatoilHydro wish to extend the project with a second phase.

Climate accounting for Borregaard

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Ostfold Research will calculate the emissons of green house gases from the production of cellulose, ethanol, lignin and vanillin at Borregaard in Sarpsborg.

Life cycle assessment of CO2 capture and storage

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

The debate surrounding the capture, transport and storage of CO2 has been mainly focused on technology and economy, and a complete environmental analysis for a Norwegian case has not been available. This is why Statoil decided to make a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a future Tjeldbergodden gas power plant, to include CO2 capture, transport and storage.

Ecofruit

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Packaging, storage and distribution of organic fruit and vegetables is particularly challenging in Norway, due to low turnover and long distances. This project will explore new solutions, especially to packaging the products, to better maintain the quality and to reduce the total environmental impact from a value chain perspective.

Ecohz environmental documentation

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Ostfold Research was commissioned by Ecohz to calculate and document the environmental impact for the overall production portfolio of the company. Three control products have been analysed using the same procedure: i.e. The average consumption profile in the Norwegian and Danish markets, as well as an average Nordic production profile.

Life cycle assessment of heat and power production based on biomass

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Due to society's increased focus on renewable energy production, NVE (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) is working to improve insight into the possible environmental consequences of using of different types of energy sources and energy technologies. Ostfold Research will therefore, on assignment from NVE, conduct life cycle assessments for power and heat production based on biomass.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of different types of packaging and their respective recovery solutions

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

NOK would like, as a foundation for its further work with the optimising of packaging, to make thorough life cycle assessments of different types of packaging. The analysis takes the consumer packaging of jam in either glass or plastic containers as a basis. The project will estimate environmental differences in both use of the different packaging materials and how different waste management affects the total environmental profile for the estimated systems.

Climate gas accounting for Choice Hotels Scandinavia

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

A pilot project was performed in 2008 to assemble a GHG account for Choice Hotels Scandinavia (Rønning and Brekke 2008). This paper presents how the account was made and the results from the undertaking. Considering the immaturity of both GHG accounting and environmental assessments in the service sector, the paper also aspires to contribute to methods development with regard to GHG accounting.

The climate challenge of food products in a holistic environmental and life cycle perspective

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

KLIMAT is a research project for documentation of environmental and resource data for food products, where emissions of green house gases is an important area. The documentation gives a better knowledge for emissions from food products and can be used as a basis for Environmental Declaration of Food products.

Innochem

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Innovations in response to new regulations of conventional materials in a life cycle, functional and holistic perspective (Innochem). The main idea behind the project is to turn new regulations for chemicals (REACH) into a promoter of innovation instead of being a threat to R&D, innovation and production of chemicals in Norway and Europe.

Refurbishment or Replacement of Buildings – What is Best for the Climate?

Field of Research: Environmental Protection

Norwegian Bank “SpareBank 1 SMN” in 2008 decided to reestablish their headquarters in Trondheim. The key question addressed in the process, was whether to rehabilitate the existing building or demolish it and construct a new one.
