Background
KLIMAT is a research project for documentation of environmental and resource data for food products, where emissions of green house gases is an important area. The documentation gives a better knowledge for emissions from food products and can be used as a basis for Environmental Declaration of Food products.
Research Challenges
The aim of the project is to develop harmonised methodology for LCA of food products. LCA of 6 selected food products are calculated:
- Banana
- Carrot
- Chicken fillet
- Minced beef
- Semi-skimmed milk
- Cheese
The case studies are used to develop and test standard calculation rules for the 6 product groups.
Project Goals
The purpose of the project is to document environmental and resource data for food products in a life cycle perspective. Based on this documentation a “Best practice”- method is developed and also tools for evaluation of environmental improvements. For each unit process, e.g. primary production, processing, transportation and retail, all emissions are measured and accounted according to LCA methods.
Results
The results fron the Klimat-project will be in two parts:
- Results from the case studies of 6 food products
- Methodological results on the use of different calculation rules
The project is a joint KMB project between Østfoldforskning, UMB and five industrial partners in the Norwegian food industry and retail sector, covering dairy, meat, fruits and vegetables and sea food products. The project has duration of three years, and the Funding program in the Agricultural sector is supporting financially together with the industrial partners.
